Lisa Lee Martin wrote an adaptation of The Hunting book Series by Elizabeth St.John. “The story was created to fill in the blanks of the book series“ said Lisa Lee Martin, continuing to explain the book jumps from a small town waitress but never explains the bar, the town or the bigger picture. “When you are reading, your mind creates the picture, which is different than film storytelling“, Lisa explains.

Newkirk, Oklahoma is on land called the Cherokee Outlet (popularly called the "Cherokee Strip" which belonged to the Cherokee Indians until 1893. The Cherokee acquiesced to the demand of the President and Department of the Interior to sell the land, then part of Oklahoma Territory, to the U.S. government. Efforts to buy the land from the Cherokee began in 1899, but were not concluded until 1893 when Congress authorized the purchase and the land was opened to non-Indian settlement by means of the Cherokee Strip Land Run on September 16, 1893. An estimated 100,000 people raced to claim plots of land.
The town of Newkirk had been laid out before the run by the government as the county seat of "K" county. It was named Lamoreaux after Silas W. Lamoreaux , who was commissioner of the Gerneral Land Office. Two miles north of Lamoreaux was Kirk, a Santa Fe Railroad cattle-shipping station.
That first day of the land run, 5,000 people staked claims in and near Lamoreaux. Claimants were allowed two town lots: one for a home and one for a business. In designated rural areas, claimants could select 160 acres. The population quickly dropped to about 2.100 as disappointed land seekers left. A town government was organized and among the first items of business as to change the name of the town from Lamoreaux to Santa Fe, but the railroad station at Kirk had been closed, so the name Newkirk was chosen on November 8, 1893.
In 1901. Newkirk suffered a major reversal when nearly a whole block of its thriving downtown burned. The wooden buildings that burned were mostly replaced with stone buildings from the distinctive yellow limestone quarried four miles east of Newkirk. "Imposing stone buildings began to give dignity and permanence to the dusty streets, while wood-framed homes gradually replace the 'proving-up' homes of the Run. Young Elms, Cottonwoods, shrubs, and flowers began to change the once treeless prairies into shaded garden spots. Newkirk's business district was placed on the National Register as a historic district in 1984.
After Oklahoma became a state in 1907, Newkirk, Blackwell, and Ponca City vied to become the county seat. An election on September 3, 1908 , gave Blackwell 2,038 votes, Newkirk 2,063 and Ponca City 1,388. Governor Haskell declared Newkirk the winner. Blackwell sued, but lost, and Newkirk retained the title. The present Kay County courthouse was built in 1926, replacing the original 1894 wooden structure that burned.
In 1992, Newkirk became the first small town to receive the Oklahoma Main Street Award. Newkirk was also the name of the town in the movie Twister's drive-in movie scene took place, through it was filmed in Guthrie, Oklahoma.
The Kay County Courthouse in Newkirk was constructed in 1925-26 , and at almost 100 years of age the original courthouse has many problems that will be addressed by a new annex which was announced by the Kay County Board of Commissioners in 2020. Some of those problems include a leaking relocated roof, electrical and plumbing problems, as well as a lack of space for the district court system. To make room to expand the court system, all other county offices will be relocated to Annex, leaving the Courthouse strictly for the court system.
Charlie Francis Adams was born on August 31, 1875 near Albany, Kansas. He received a degree in pharmacy from the University of Kansas and opened a drug store in Newkirk in 1899 at the ripe age of 24, around about the same time, Adams patented Good Luck Liniment which consisted mainly of linseed oil. He always told his family that in addition to the ingredients listed on the label it also had a "secret" ingredient. This ingredient remains a "secret" to this day as Good Luck Liniment is still made. Although the liniment label states "for veterinary use only" many Newkirk residents can attest to its healing powers on the human animal also. The label states that it "does not smart, burn or blister". It does not, however, say anything about the odor.
At a very early age, Adams fell in love with horses, particularly harness race horses. He kept his horses in the barn behind his home at 421 North Walnut and maintained a practice track in the 800 block of West 8th.
Charlie Adams bought his favorite trotter in Law Country, eleven miles east and one and a half miles north of Newkirk in 1937. Named after the patent medicine, Good Luck was a 4 year old that had always paced the pasture but Adams shod him to trot. Good Luck was rained out in almost every race meet in 1940; However in 1941 he won more firsts that any other trotter in the United States. During the war years, Adams and Good Luck were basically idle as far as races were concerned; however Adams put this time to good use in keeping Good Luck in shape by racing him daily on this practice track. After his retirement, Adams entered most of the harness racing circuits in Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska. in 1947 with the war over., Good Luck won every race, losing only one heat in the whole season, and in honor of the pairs amazing success, Newkirk held a parade for the duo in September of that year. By 1948 Good Luck had won over $13,000 in purses. In 1949 when Good Luck was 16 and Adams was 74, they won 22 out of 23 races. The horse, knowing Adams was hard of hearing let him know when another horse was coming up fast by laying both ears back. Career-wise , he won 32 first places, 5 second places and 2 third places.
